Is the Seine Suitable for Children Under 6?

Why it’s good for under-6s: This pop-up seasonal Paris swimming pool is calmer than other central Paris locations. It’s also supervised during the summer, with dedicated family-friendly spaces.

Children’s areas: Some pools or enclosed swimming zones are shallower and more suitable for younger children. IMPORTANT: (always check the age/height rules for the specific season before you go).

Safety: Lifeguards are on duty during opening hours, and swimming is only allowed in designated areas.

Facilities: Changing rooms, toilets, showers, nearby cafés and shaded areas.

Getting there: The metro stations nearest to Bassin de la Villette are (Jaurès, Stalingrad or Riquet).

Good to know: Swimming at Bassin de la Villette is free and does not require advance booking. However, entry is first come, first served, so arrive early on hot days as the swimming area can reach capacity. Some Paris Plages activities require free on-site tickets issued from midday.

Piscine Butte-aux-Cailles combines historic charm with family-friendly outdoor facilities, with outdoor pools and a summer solarium.

⚠️ Aquaboulevard (15e) – **only for kids over 3 year’s old**

This huge swimming pool boasts a giant outside area (think Centre-Parcs-style pool with loads of different themed areas). However, the pool unfortunately does not admit kids under 3, (must bring ID). But a top pick for older children.

 Piscine Keller (15e)

Not the fanciest Paris pool, but there is a retractable roof for hot summer days and a smaller pool suitable for families.

Île de Loisirs de Créteil

Has a sandy beach & wave pool (seasonal). **IMPORTANT TO NOTE 💦 Summer wave pool & water play (mid-June–late August). Advance booking required. In June it’s typically open Wed, Sat & Sun; from July Tue–Sun. Be sure to check availability before travelling as opening hours can change daily.

Island Recreation Vaires (Torcy)

One of the largest leisure islands far east of Paris, combining beach, water sports and family activities — perfect for a full-day summer escape. A great option to combine with a Disneyland trip as it’s not too far. More info here

Tips for Swimming Outdoors in Paris with Young Children

Bring non-slip shoes for splash areas
Many outdoor swimming spots and splash areas have wet, slippery surfaces. Water shoes or sandals with good grip can help prevent slips and make it easier for young children to walk around safely.

Pack a swimming cap
Many Paris pools require children (and adults) to wear a swimming cap, so bring one with you to avoid being caught out. It is also useful for keeping hair out of little ones’ faces while swimming.

Men’s swimwear: Bring fitted swim trunks rather than loose board shorts. Many French public pools require tight-fitting swimwear for hygiene reasons and may refuse entry to swimmers wearing long, baggy board shorts.

Arrive early on hot days
Popular swimming spots can get very busy during heatwaves and sunny weekends – coming early gives you a chance to find a good shady spot!

Bring sun protection and bring your own tents/ umbrellas for shade
Pack sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and a cover-up. Shade can often be limited at some outdoor swimming locations.
